Winc Education – was held at the exquisite Star Event Centre in Sydney and hosted by Australian comedian, radio and television presenter Merrick Watts. Serenading the audience was Modern Vintage, a collective of some of Australia’s finest musicians who have been performing for more than 20 years. Wesley College in Perth picked up the award for Best Student Wellbeing Program for its holistic, campus-wide approach to making sure young people feel supported both inside and outside of the school gates. “At Wesley College, we have a whole-school wellbeing-driven program, so it takes every staff member at the college buying in and giving their all,” Sophie Carrol, director of student wellbeing and service learning at Wesley College, told The Educator. “One of the contributing factors for us winning tonight is that we have wonderful partnerships with industry experts that help guide our wellbeing program, and a great way of reflecting, getting feedback and driving our program through data, which is really important for student wellbeing.” The Ideagen Best First Nations Education Program award went to Lake Cargelligo Central School in NSW. The school’s cultural mentor, Josie King, said its success was a group effort, and thanked the teaching and learning community for their hard work and dedication. “Our success was from Kirsten Morris [one of the school’s Aboriginal education officers] starting our program, and our wonderful principal, our DEL in our area who nominated us and who had belief in us, and the girls that we take under our wing at Lake Cargelligo.” Rachel Partis, head of customer at Ideagen CompliSpace, said the company was proud to sponsor the award for the second year in a row. “We value and appreciate the excellence in this area in schools, and we are very proud to partner with schools in their journey,” Partis told The Educator. “I think the Australian Education Awards are important because they highlight critical areas where schools, and individual contributors within schools, excel and overachieve, and I think it’s really important that we as a community are able to celebrate that.” Taking out the top national awards of Australian School Principal of the Year and Australian School of the Year were Anne Johnstone from Ravenswood School for Girls, and Hunter Sports High School, respectively. Johnstone attributed the award to “a strong focus on connection and belonging” at the school. “Helping to foster a wonderful school culture, but also as a Positive Education school, we’re really passionate about implementing the science of wellbeing and recognising that learning and wellbeing are inextricably linked.” After Hunter Sports High School was named Australian School of the Year, principal Rachel Byrne said she was in “absolute shock” and “amazed”. “We put the kids at the heart of every decision we make, so all the programs that we run, and all the teaching and learning, is absolutely around personalising the learning for our students to make sure they’re the best human beings for a complex world that they’ll enter once they leave school.”

Judging The Australian Education Awards team sent the shortlisted Excellence Awardee submissions to an independent panel of judges comprising education industry leaders and senior representatives. The judges are well known and well respected in the industry and their judgement is impartial, balanced, incisive and fair. Any judge with a conflict of interest in a particular category recuses themselves from judging that category. The judges reviewed the Excellence Awardee submissions and allocated a score to each Excellence Awardee. The Excellence Awardee with the highest score in each category once the judging process was completed was named the winner of that category.

Whether it’s his infectious humour over radio and television, his extraordinary performance on the hit reality-military training show SAS: Australia or his exceptional wine expertise, it’s no doubt that Merrick Watts is one of the most versatile and enthralling entertainers in Australia. Merrick founded a quaint touring comedy festival called Grapes of Mirth in 2018. Grapes of Mirth pulls together a bunch of Merrick’s comedian mates to perform stand up at wineries around the country. These acclaimed, sell out shows, continue to gain popularity and praise as a hell of a great weekend away. Merricks originally rose to fame in the early 2000s as one half of the comedy duo Merrick and Rosso who together took triple j drive to all time ratings highs and were the first voices on the commercial NOVA network. They then built a cult TV fan base with shows on Nine, Ten and the Comedy Channel. As a solo performer, Merrick carved out a new course: as an actor on The Hollowmen and Underbelly; and as a comedian, touring a solo show for the first time in 2017 with Man of the House. In 2020, Merrick undertook a physically and psychologically demanding training course as part of his appearance in Channel 7’s SAS: Australia. The record-breaking show saw Merrick push himself to the limit as he underwent a series of tests from the real SAS selection process. He discusses his experiences on the show in his successful, ongoing solo wine show An Idiot’s Guide to Wine. Merrick has and continues to appear on television on such shows as Thank God You’re Here, The Project, and Hughesy We Have a Problem. He has also appeared as a regular panellist on Network Ten’s Studio 10. He’s a stand-up bloke, pardon the pun.
