Nestled in the tranquil surrounds of Wondunna in Hervey Bay, Fraser Coast Anglican College (FCAC) is not just a school; it’s a symphony of inspiration, beating at the heart of regional Queensland.
In recognition of this, the school received an Excellence Award in the Prime Super Regional School of the Year category at the Australian Education Awards 2023. Indeed, this award was a testament to how the college has been standing tall, showcasing how regional challenges can be converted into opportunities for educational excellence.
Operating in an area characterised by its ‘regional’ context, FCAC is not a stranger to the hurdles of distance or socio-economic gaps. With Fraser Coast’s household incomes and educational completions lagging behind the state’s average, coupled with heightened unemployment rates, it would be easy to assume that the local youths’ prospects might be clouded. Yet Fraser Coast Anglican College proves otherwise.
Rather than bemoaning the lack of metropolitan resources, the college has creatively harnessed the strengths of its surroundings. Its unique approach to Outdoor Education is a testament to its commitment to leveraging its regional setting. By partnering with local employers, including hospitals and engineering firms, FCAC has played a pivotal role in branding the region as an epicentre of opportunity, reassuring families that their young ones won’t be educationally compromised by choosing a regional upbringing.
One of FCAC’s standout initiatives is the ‘Edge’ program. Far from a traditional classroom experience, it is a bridge connecting students with their local community, industries and potential employers. FCAC is in the business of opening doors – doors to personal growth, thriving careers and post-school achievements. It is sculpting a generation of students who, while rooted in their community, possess the competitive edge typically associated with metropolitan schools.
But the secret sauce to FCAC’s success isn’t just its innovative programs. It’s an unwavering commitment to excellence. By cultivating relationships with other top-tier schools, FCAC ensures that it’s at the forefront of contemporary educational practices. This drive for constant improvement doesn’t just benefit the students; it enriches the staff too. Despite regional Australia grappling with teacher shortages, FCAC, with its culture of success, has managed to magnetise educators from urban hubs, many experiencing the regional charm for the first time.
However, at the heart of this academic powerhouse is something profoundly simple – community. FCAC’s revised Mission and Values statement, with community at its cornerstone, isn’t just ink on paper. When tragedy unfolded in the latter part of 2022, the college’s response was nothing short of heartwarming, epitomising the unity, resilience and compassion that regional communities are celebrated for.
Indeed, Fraser Coast Anglican College’s journey is more than just a success story; it’s a narrative of determination, innovation and community spirit. It stands as a beacon, illuminating how regional schools can not only match but exceed the standards set by their metropolitan counterparts. For educators and principals nationwide, FCAC’s tale is not just inspirational – it’s a testament to what’s achievable when a community comes together with a shared vision of excellence.
The Lakes College Culinary Club (TLCCC) started with a team of 12 students and has now expanded to over 30 members, showcasing its continued success through participation in college events and even catering for local community organisations. This program not only imparts valuable culinary skills but also teaches the significance of community service, fosters practical abilities and cultivates a professional work ethic.
Spanning ages 11 to 18, the Culinary Club challenges students to create elaborate six-course degustation dinners and manage large-scale catering for college gatherings. Chloe, a Year 7 student, praises the program for imparting essential life skills in an enjoyable way among friends. Likewise, Emily values the connections she forms despite the program’s demanding pace.
