Dr Briony Scott has been Principal of Wenona since 2011. Her guidance and care for staff, students and families, particularly those experiencing hardship and challenge, has been a hallmark of her leadership to date. Dr Scott’s leadership is driven by a belief in the power of kindness and compassionate action, built through a practice of deep listening to the narratives of others. Dr Scott’s unapologetic stance in creating a school environment that empowers young women to have the strength of character, agency and effective leadership skills to serve and shape their world permeates the lived experience of every Wenona student. The messages delivered to the Wenona community through Assemblies, weekly newsletters and communications, and in Dr Scott’s teaching are equally compelling and inspiring for staff and parents.

A firm believer in identifying and developing leadership talent, Dr Scott’s efforts to develop her own staff as well as those in leadership roles outside our school environment is well-known. In her time as Principal, Dr Scott has nurtured the growth of many senior leaders, with at least four going on to lead schools of their own. Dr Scott’s establishment of the Renaissance Women’s Leadership Network (RWLN), the purpose of which is to provide women in education, from all sectors, the opportunity to connect, network, and support each other as they navigate their educational leadership careers, has proven to be of great benefit for all who have chosen to engage. Since 2014, the RWLN has met several times each year for networking, forums and lectures.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Scott has led the Wenona community with a steadfast and resolute determination to focus on the wellbeing of staff and students, using common sense and a consultative approach to daily decision making. This approach provided reassurance and led the way in risk-mitigation strategies such as the wearing of face masks during the early months of 2020, long before Public Health Orders dictated. In terms of teaching and learning, of particular note was the School’s ability to seamlessly and quickly transition to remote learning, made possible through the creation of the Athenaeum Learning Pathway (ALP). Designed to enable the delivery of online and hybrid learning, the ALP offered possibilities for agile approaches to timetabling and staffing, using a ‘courses’, as opposed to ‘classes’ approach, and to new ways of capturing evidence of student learning progress through online examinations and formative assessment practice.
With an active and positive online and media presence, Dr Scott’s contribution to the education debate more broadly is highly regarded and respected. In recent years, she has played an important role within and beyond the education community on several key issues: consent education in schools, female leadership, leading through COVID, and in support of the teaching profession as a whole. Her message reach is far and often counter-cultural in its perspective, creating a sense of hope and optimism amongst those that follow her.
