Teaching and Learning. Our PL culture, underpinned by andragogic principles, is differentiated to recognise diverse staff experience, structured with organisational and personal goals, respectful of teacher autonomy, context-specific to ensure relevancy, and evaluated to assess methods of improvement. Non-teaching staff also participate in PL, enthusiastic to grow their knowledge and enhance support capacity.
Lauries encourages excellence through PL, by establishing environments that nurture effective and positive collaboration, reflection and feedback. For instance, regular staff meetings have been replaced by Professional Learning Team (PLT) meetings, where Faculty groups meet regularly to engage in action research and develop solutions to site-based problems of practice.
The College also utilises conferences to build staff capacity and networks. Meeting to Learning (M2L) is a site-based PL conference involving a Teaching and Learning theme, typically opens with a keynote speaker, and then moves into concurrent sessions (led by teachers). The M2L day concludes with knowledge sharing/implementation session in Faculty groups. SLC collaborates regularly with other schools and is part of a Learning EXchange (LEX). LEX is a collaboration between partner schools to ensure high quality teaching. Teachers have opportunities to develop and share practice, fostering high expectations and excellence.
St Laurence’s College is a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice Tradition. Home to 1930 students and 240 staff, Lauries devotes significant resourcing (>$90,000pa) to ensure both individual and collective Professional Learning (PL) for staff is embedded in and linked to the College strategic plan.
