The Awards – sponsored by Education Perfect, A Team Tuition, Grok Academy, Pivot Professional Learning and Reconciliation Australia – offered an exciting glimpse into the ways in which our schools have not only persevered through the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, but used that disruption to innovate new ways of helping students and teachers achieve their best. Shane Doherty, principal of Bunbury Primary School, which was crowned the Education Perfect Australian School of the Year and Primary School of the Year – Government, said the Award would not have been possible without the resilience and courage shown by his staff and students through the pandemic, adding that it confirms everything the school has believed in over the past 18 years. “They already believed our school to be a great school, but to have it formally acknowledged through these Awards expands and confirms that belief.” Staff at Bunbury are regularly provided opportunities to continually develop their data literacy skills and understandings to better inform their teaching and learning practices, which are then shared with other schools through the WA Education Department’s DigiTech initiative. This openness to share with other schools also extends to organising and hosting professional learning opportunities made available across the network and region. Doherty said some focus solely on NAPLAN results, which he believes to be “a very narrow view of achieving your best.” “Our school focuses on academic achievement as part of being Caring, being Respectful and being Responsible,” he said. “I would like to see an education system that values the development of the whole person as much as high quality NAPLAN results.” The Pivot Best Student Wellbeing Program award was taken out by Mooroopna Park Primary School, which bagged the same award in 2020 after what was arguably the most tumultuous time for students and staff in living memory. The school provides a rich variety of supports for students and families, including a full-time speech therapist, school chaplain, play therapist, before-and-after school care, visiting paediatrician (fortnightly) Koori Education Support (KESO), a private bus and a full-time chef who provides breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon tea each day. “We have great support from local businesses that enable us to offer all this and more at no cost to our families. The people involved in our school have a genuine desire to support our students and families,” Principal, Hayden Beaton, said. Northern Territory school, Larrakeyah Primary School, scooped the Grok Academy Best STEM Program award. Several years of research by visiting leading STEM schools in Singapore and Melbourne, and attending STEM conferences, has shaped the school’s STEM model and its whole school approach to teaching this important subject. Principal Fathma Mauger said he success of the program comes from “building capacity for staff, growing its leaders, working with the school community to maximise student outcomes and initiating innovative programs and school partnerships.” Mauger said the steps involved in the school’s 4C’s model include empathising with the problem, defining the problem, developing ideas and solutions, developing a prototype and testing the prototype. “Students learn from their mistakes and refine to develop stronger solutions to problems. This is the way forward and the type of learners we need now and in the future.”
Categories A total of 28 categories were featured in the Australian Education Awards that looked at achievements related to individuals or schools operating in the K-12 education industry.
